George is a Touched boy living in the St. Romaulda's Orphanage whose turn is manifested through sharp thorns over his forearms.[1]

Biography

George and other residents sing in the Orphanage kitchen as Mary Brighton plays the piano. They stop upon Amalia True's arrival, so he asks if there's a song she'd like.[1]

Later that day, George helps assembling the brightener at the Clandlemas Park to amplify Mary's song through the city. He watches as Mary sings her song only the Touched can hear. Winemar Kroos begins shooting at Mary, so George lowers himself to hide from the bullets. Afterward, George and the others return home, where they find Bonfire Annie creating a fireball that illuminates the dozens of other Touched who heard Mary's song.[1]

George sides with Penance Adair in her plan to save Maladie from public hanging. He is charged with pulling the lever on the cart after two minutes from her signal. After the prototype's been deployed, George is to drive out to Porchill Road. Penance shoots her umbrella into the sky to signal him, but the plan goes wrong when Maladie, in reality Clara Stowe, jumps to her death anyway and part of the audience dies electrocuted. As the crowd runs in panic, Nimble Jack screams for George not to touch the lever. When they return to the Orphanage, George throws his jacket back into the wagon, inadvertently pulling the lever and releasing Penance's invention.[2]
