Auto-carriage is a vehicle created by Penance Adair.[1]

History[]

Penance debuts her prototype while escaping a group of masked men who are after Myrtle Haplisch. She drives the girl and Amalia True to safety in the St. Romaulda's Orphanage, where the residents circle the auto-carriage to admire the new invention. Harriet Kaur and Aneel sit in the car together and agree they should marry inside it.[1]

Penance and Amalia request the Beggar King, for a price of his choosing, information on whoever is hunting the Touched. They offer him an automated motor-carriage and payment, to which the Beggar King agrees.[1] He eventually receives his auto-carriage and lets his children drive it around the yard. Although, he doesn't consider the vehicle practical, because it doesn't have a horse to protect him in a crash.[2]

Penance uses her auto-carriage to drive Lucy Best and Harriet to the Bidlow Estate for Lavinia Bidlow's charitable monthly fete. After Augustus Bidlow suddenly acts coldly with Penance, Lucy suggests that she leaves early by herself. Driving back to the Orphanage, Penance has her path blocked by a cart, so she reaches a horn she keeps in the auto-carriage and blows it to call the owner's attention. Two men surround the auto-carriage and capture Penance, taking her to Maladie's hideout in Southwark & Vauxhall Water Works.[3]

Amalia also uses the auto-carriage to drive to the Massen Estate when she visits Gilbert Massen.[4]

When Lord Massen sees the Beggar King's auto-carriage, he calls the machine impressive and recognizes it as Penance's work. Although, he says that an uneducated Irish girl building something in days, while men of industry have labored over for years, is a thing that threatens the natural order, and therefore monstrous.[2]
